Atlantic Station is a community in Midtown Atlanta, GA area, located to the northwest. It features a shopping center, office buildings, condominiums, townhomes, and apartment complexes. The 138 acre suburb was built on the abandoned brownfield site of the Atlantic Steel factory and had its grand opening in 2005.
Atlantic Station is a high-end retail and residential hub in the heart of the city. The Atlantic Station mall, a prominent outdoor shopping destination, serves as the center of this district. The Millennium Gate Museum and the Robert C. Williams Paper Museum are two examples of cultural institutions in the area. Typical eateries serving breakfast and burgers can be found close to the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Atlantic Steel, which established in 1901, once stood on the location of what is now Atlantic Station. It was almost shut down in the mid-1970s, but the steel mill stayed open at least nominally so that the enormous expenditures associated with cleaning up the contaminated soil from years of production could be avoided.
In 1997, when Jim Jacoby’s company took over as the property contractor of the site, he began putting the project together. Private investment played a major role in the transformation of the area into what is now Atlantic Station; nonetheless, a special tax district was created to pay for city tax bonds for public facilities like streets, sidewalks, and sewers.
The District, the Commons, and the Village are the three sections of Atlantic Station, and they are located along 17th Street between the Downtown Connector and Northside Drive. The majority of Atlantic Station’s commercial and office space may be found in the District. The mall, which opened in October 2005, was designed to resemble an outdoor retail district and features a variety of stores, restaurants, and a 16-screen Regal cinema. Two or three stories of condominiums are above the ground floor of shops. Many of the above-ground streets are closed off for special events, making the commercial district ideal for strolling. The 7,200-space parking garage below ground makes this possible. The TWELVE Hotel and Residences Atlantic Station, a 26-story, 336-foot structure, opened in December 2005 in the southwestern part of The District. Additionally, townhomes built in 2004 flank 16th Street just south of The District.
